Title |
Harness pendant |
||
Description |
English: A copper-alloy medieval circa 14th century shield shaped harness pendant, complete apart from the upper edge of the suspension loop which is missing due to old break. This pendant measures 26mm in length and 17mm in width. The suspension loop is set at right angles to the plane of the pendant. The front face of the pendant is decorated with an engrailed cross, which has a traces of a white metal coating at one end. This engrailed cross is likely to be a heraldic device and to have originally have had enamel within each angle, indeed flecks of degraded enamel can be seen in each angle and are now greenish in colour. A similar shield shaped pendant, though larger, has been found in Castle Mall, Norwich (Ashley 2002, 43, no 189), without the original colours of the enamel and the cross present the heraldry of this pendant can be traced no further. |
