Title
Harness pendant
Description
English: A complete copper-alloy Medieval Heraldic shield-shaped harness pendant with a concave back, probably from being bent. The suspension loop is oval and flat with a central circular hole and set at right angles to the plane of the pendant.

The front face of the shield bears the armorial device. Probably gules, a lion rampant (argent or Or). There are traces of gilding on the back face, perhaps suggesting Or. This suggests it could be the Arms of Edmund Fitzalau, 1st Earl of Arundel (1267-1302), or his son Edmund Fitzalau, 2nd Earl of Arundel (1285-1326). There are full biographies of both in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. However, if the lion was argent this suggests it could be the Arms of John, 2nd Lord Mowbray (1286-1322). This biography is also listed in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

This pendant measures 32.08mm in length, 19.02mm in width, 1.36mm in thickness, 3.63g in weight.

There is a similar example from Suffolk recorded on the PAS database (SF-8D88F3).
