Title |
Harness pendant |
||
Description |
English: A complete copper-alloy Medieval Heraldic shield shaped harness pendant with a concave back, probably from being bent. Part of the suspension loop is missing, but would have originally been set at right angles to the plane of the pendant.
The front face of the shield bears the armorial device. Gules, a lion rampant (argent or Or). There are slight flecks of gold on the lion suggesting Or. This suggests it could be the Arms of Edmund Fitzalau, 1st Earl of Arundel (1267-1302), or his son Edmund Fitzalau, 2nd Earl of Arundel (1285-1326). There are full biographies of both in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. However, if the lion was argent this suggests it could be the Arms of John, 2nd Lord Mowbray (1286-1322). This biography is also listed in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. This pendant measures 36.64mm in length, 23.88mm in width, 2.33mm in thickness, 7.48g in weight. |
