Title
Harness pendant
Description
English: A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant. The suspension loop is intact and the artefact is in good condition. The blue enamel ground survives complete, and the heraldic design is clear. Three closely-spaced diagonal lines run parallel from top left to bottom right (a ‘bend cortised’); below left are three small lions facing right (‘lioncels rampant’); above right are three more. No gilding remains; however, the bend cortised and lioncels retain a greyish-black residue, which may perhaps imply that these portions were silvered. I. Szymanski has identified this shield as the arms of the de Bohun family, although it is not known which member. This artefact dates to the 13th or 14th century.
