Title
Harness pendant
Description
English: A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant and hanger. The hanger and pendant are corroded together, perhaps by iron from the pin. The hanger is small, apparently with its attachment spike present on the reverse. The artefact is in poor condition, with the base of the pendant broken and the surface corroded; the surface has a light verigris colour. Much of the red enamel coating survives on the hanger; it forms the ground for a chevron, above which are two stars (mullets), and below which is a third. I. Szymanski has identified this as the arms of John le Sturmy, of Sutton Sturmy, Worcs; the chevron and mullets would have originally been silvered. His son Robert used the same arms. This artefact dates to the late 13th or early 14th century.
