Title
Harness pendant
Description
English: A cast copper alloy shield-shaped horse harness pendant, withpart of the suspension loop surviving. Remnants of pale blue enamel are visible all over face; the enamel on reverse has lost all original colour and is now visible only as a smooth layer. There is some mechanical damage to face, including three narrow, vertical scrapes; remains of horizontal zig-zag line cut into surface near top still visible.

Although this pendant has deteriorated whilst in the ground, much of its enamel is still present as a visible layer when viewed edge-on. It is unfortunate that the colour has leached from the reverse, but the blue of the face is still visible. Also visible under magnification is a zig-zag line cut into the metal about a fifth of the way from the top, which originally separated two colours; however, the three vertical lines visible on the photograph are scrapes which are not related to the pendant's original design. The arms on this pendant when it was new were azure, a chief indented or. These were the arms of Ralph de Sandwich, brother of the Henry de Sandwich who was bishop of London (died 1273).
