Title |
Harness pendant |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant. The pendant is in poor condition, and corroded, but the face retains much of its enamel. The face has an intricate heraldic design, in the form of three lions ‘passant gardant’, facing left, on a red background. Near the top of the pendant is a blue ‘label’, which originally had two fleurs-de-lis on each of the three down-projecting elements. No gilding survives, but it is likely that the fleurs-de-lis and lions were gold. I. Szymanski has identified this as the arms of the Earls of Lancaster. This artefact dates to the 13th or 14th century. (Recorded from a photograph). |
