Harness pendant
Description
English: A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant. The suspension loop is intact and the artefact is in good condition. Large amounts of enamel and gilding survive. The integrally-cast design is clear: the ground is formed of horizontal stripes, of enamel (now mostly green but perhaps originally blue) alternating with gilding- ‘barruly azure and or’; the strips continue on the suspension loop. Over this are six small red birds facing left- ‘an orle of martlets gules’. I. Szymanski believes that this may be the crest of the Valence earls of Pembroke. This artefact dates to the 13th or 14th century.
