Harness pendant
Description
English: A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant. The suspension loop is intact and the pendant is in fair condition. The surface is corroded, with a light verdigris colour and some brown patches on the reverse (which I. Szymanski suggests are patches of red enamel). No enamel or gilding remains on the face. The face has an integrally-cast design in the form of a ‘lion rampant’, facing left, which may have a forked tail. I. Szymanski has tentatively identified this as the arms of the de Havering family of Dorset, although this is by no means certain. This artefact dates to the 13th or 14th century.
