Title |
Harness pendant |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant. The suspension loop is intact, although the upper left corner is broken off and the artefact is in poor condition. The surface is corroded, with a verdigris patina and rough edges. The suspension loop is unusual, with the hole facing forward rather then sideways. The design, formed by lines cast into the face, is unclear, but may show a bird with spread wings, within an outer border. Szymanski’s interpretation of a heraldic bird with a ‘bend’ is not fully justified by the surviving design. The shield may alternatively show another creature such as a dragon, griffon or lion, although one must accept that identification is not possible. This artefact dates to the 13th or 14th century. |
