Harness pendant |

Description |
English: A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant. The suspension loop is intact and the artefact is in good condition. The surface is corroded, with an apparently brown patina, which may be dirt. A large amount of enamel ground survives, with the heraldic components indicated by the gaps. The enamel has a buff colour which was probably originally white. The heraldic design is fairly clear: the shield was apparently divided horizontally into two portions. Upon the upper were three roundels in a row- possibly roses. The lower portion was ‘ermine’ (white with black ermine ‘tips’). I. Szymanski has tentatively identified this as the arms of John of Southebury, a knight from Bedfordshire; his arms had a red upper portion with gold roses; the white enamel of the upper part of the shield may have been originally overlaid by red enamel. This artefact dates to the 13th or 14th century. |
