Title
Harness pendant
Description
English: A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant, in poor condition, with a missing suspension loop. The surface is corroded with rough edges and the bottom tip almost broken-off. No enamel survives on the face, although some scraps of black remain on the reverse. The face has the remains of rough decoration in the form of three diagonal lines in each direction, which divide the face into a series of lozenges. I. Szymanski reports extensive gilding on the face. The heraldic term for these arms is ‘fretty sable’. These arms may be those of one of several men called Robert de Champagne (of Great Doddington, Northants, or of Croft, Leics) or Robert de Hertford/Berteford, or the Murdak family of Warwickshire. This artefact dates to the 13th or 14th century.
