Title |
Harness pendant |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant and hanger. The pendant is missing its base. It has fairly square shoulders and almost-straight sides. The base of the pendant seems to have also had corners between the side edges and the diagonal edges of the base itself. The pendant itself is small, with a proportionally long suspension loop. The hanger is intact but small, consisting only of the hinge and a spike/pin for attachment, the end of which has been broken off. The fact that this spike is straight is curious, as a harness pendant would be expected to attach to a leather harness, by bending the spike over like a rivet. It is possible that this pendant was either never used, or else attached to something other than leather. The pendant has no discernable traces of decoration, although I. Szymanski claims to have seen some fragments of gilding and red enamel, and possibly an incised saltire cross. This artefact dates to the 14th century. |
