Title
Harness pendant
Description
English: A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant. The suspension loop is intact and the artefact is in good condition. The surface has a greenish-brown patina and is fairly smooth. Most of the red enamel decoration survives on the face, along with a small amount of gilding. The crest shown has a red background with three lions ‘passant gardant’, which would originally have been gilded. This was the coat arms of England until the late 13th century, as used by the royal retinue, which travelled all across the country on royal progress. This pendant dates to the mid-late 13th century.
