Title
Harness pendant
Description
English: A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant, along with the hinge. The suspension loop is intact, corroded to the remains of the end of the hanger. The artefact is in fair condition. The surface is worn and slightly corroded, with a blotchy greenish patina. All gilding and enamel is lost. The crest shown has three lions ‘passant gardant’, cast in relief on the face, within a border. These would have originally been gilded, on a red background. This was the coat arms of England until the late 13th century, as used by the royal retinue, which travelled all across the country on royal progress. This pendant dates to the mid-late 13th century.
