Title
Harness pendant
Description
English: A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant. The suspension loop is intact. The artefact is in fair condition. The surface is corroded, with a blotchy dark greenish patina, and quite a lot of black staining. A small amount of the red enamel survives on the face, along with a few tiny patches of gilding. The crest can still be made out: it had three lions ‘passant gardant’. These would have originally been gilded, on a red background. This was the coat arms of England until the late 13th century, as used by the royal retinue, which travelled all across the country on royal progress. This pendant dates to the mid-late 13th century.
