Description |
English: A copper-alloy shield shaped medieval circa 14th century harness pendant. This pendant measures 39.2mm in length and 25.9mm in width. The suspension loop is set at right angles to the plane of the pendant. The front face of the pendant is decorated with a heraldic design of three chevrons, the chevrons have traces of red enamel within them and around them there is traces of gilding this heraldry was therefore Or three chevrons Gules. This is the heraldic device of the de Clare family, Earls of Gloucester and Hereford. Similar pendants of de Clare are also known from Norfolk (Ashley 2002, p11 fig 11 and p42 no 59). |
