Title
Harness Pendant from Roxby cum Risby
Description
English: Copper alloy with enamel

Harness Pendant. Cast shield shaped pendant with an oval suspension loop at right angles to the display face. A well-preserved blazon depicts two lions or leopards passant left - probably originally the yellow colour of the metal (or) against a ground of red (gules) enamel; above the leopards a rectangular field of blue (azure) enamel bears an arrangement of paired horizontal and at least eleven vertical lines between them. The red enamel is revealed at one end of the upper motif, suggesting the application of the blue enamel over the red.

The gold leopards or lions are traditionally linked with the Arms of England, and more speculatively with royal service. The barred motif - which if heraldic rules were followed should be yellow or white (argent) against its blue ground - is less common, and has not been identified by cursory survey, though it is not a ladder, which would be depicted upright or aslant. Advice on this detail from a better informed researcher would be welcomed by this reporter. Suggested date: Medieval, 1250-1350.

Length: 40.1mm, Width: 23.6mm, Thickness (clear of loop): 3.2mm, Weight: 7.17gms.
