Title
Harness Pendant (reverse)
Description
English: A copper-alloy shield shaped harness pendant from the Medieval period, circa AD1100-1400. The obverse surface of the pendant depicts four raised plant-like designs, each design is pointing into the centre of the pendant. Each 'plant' has five petals or leaves. One plant extends down from below the suspension loop, another extends upwards from the pointed terminal of the shield and the other two extend sideways into the pendant from either side of the shield. The enamel no longer survives, although one would expect there to be red enamel on the negative area between the raised designs of the plants/flowers. There are traces of gilding on the pendant and on the suspension loop. The suspension loop is still intact though quite worn on the reverse. The reverse of the pendant is undecorated. The pendant is very worn in general and little detail survives. The pendant has been coated with some sort of lacquer so it is dark reddish-brown in colour. Parallels for this piece can be seen in the reference below.
