Title |
Harness Pendant |
||
Description |
English: A complete copper-alloy Medieval Heraldic shield shaped harness pendant. The suspension loop is bent, but would have originally been set at right angles to the plane of the pendant.
The front face of the shield bears the amorial device enclosed within a raised outer border. Ermine on a chief indented (of 4 points) sable, two lions rampant Or. The Arms are of the Bures family who lived at Acton Suffolk. The same Arms are displayed on the shield on the monumental brass of Sir Robert de Bures at the parish church of All Saints, Acton. This is dated to c.1331. There is a strong possibility that the horse harness pendant belonged to Sir Robert or one of his retainers. The pendant measures 44.68mm in length (including suspension loop), 27.07mm in width, 3.03mm in thickness, 11.640g in weight. A similar pendant was found in 1999 in Little Cornard. |
