Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Harlem Road Community Center, 4255 Harlem Road, Amherst, New York, August 2022. Built in 1924, this handsome brick structure exemplifies the Collegiate Gothic school of architecture with its eclectic Medieval-inspired mishmash of Gothic and Tudor architectural tropes (witness, respectively, the symmetrical façade and rectangular floor plan as well as the building's low-slung dimensions bluntly pointed compound arch crowning the entrance). The building was constructed as a larger replacement for an 1880s-era one-room schoolhouse that served District No. 18, which covered most of the portion of town now known as Snyder - an area that was then in the throes of evolution from rural to suburban - and continued in service as Harlem Road Elementary School after the founding of the Amherst Central School District. The school finally closed in 1988 and was sold to the town, who repurposed it as a community center which it remains today.
