Summary[edit]

Description
English: Hansel and Gretel

Record number: 23031702 Artist: Koch, Otto Albert (German, 1866-1921) Item caption, front: Deutsche Märchen / Hänsel und Gretel Item caption/descriptive text, back: Uniform title: Grimm: Hänsel und Gretel (“Hansel and Gretel”) Dimensions: 91 x 142 mm. Date: 1899 or earlier Nationality: German Publisher: Lith. Kunstanstalt Heinr. & Aug. Brüning, Hanau Series: Medium: Interpretive notes: In this unusual composition, a top frieze is punctuated by grinning heart-shaped gingerbread cookies that resemble parodies of ancient Greek theatrical masks. The larger left side scene shows Hansel and Gretel standing uncertainly near the entrance to the Witch's house, which is guarded by other unfortunate children who have been baked into gingerbread statues. The Witch seems to entice them closer. The smaller scene on the upper right shows Hansel and Gretel returning from the forest, crossing a stream on the backs of some friendly ducks, carrying loot from the Witch's house (including one of the heart-shaped cookies!) after baking her in her own oven. The Witch herself has been transformed into a harmless decorated cookie. As is typical of late nineteenth century postcards, a portion of the front has been reserved for the sender's message, as the back was supposed to be used only for the recipient's address. Subject headings: Brothers; Sisters; Witches; Ducks
