...
One of two Challen pianos at Abbey Road Studios, these give a nice warm tone; a softer sound than a ground piano or the Steinway Vertegrand. Songwriters were especially found of singing on pop songs. The pianos also had a mechanical option for a metalic sound, called a 'jangle box' setting. Tis added brass strips over the strings, producing a sharp bright sound some musicians referred to as 'tack piano'. This piano, built in the 1930's, has been used constantly in the studios and was another favorite of the The Beatles, who used it extensively on "Magical Mystery Tour" and "The White Album". It is still used on pop and rock sessions today. |
