Description

Hallsands

Original description:

Ruined cottages at Hall Sands, Stokenham

This does not seem a sensible place to build cottages, but they were originally protected by a shingle beach. This was removed by the unscrupulous contractor for the Devonport Dockyard, who took away 500,000 tons of shingle. There were 37 fishermen's cottages, and they were demolished or damaged by a series of storms, the last cottage going in 1917. This photo was taken in 1992, so there might be even less of the ruins now.
