Summary
[edit]DescriptionHaida Headdress (2609074480).jpg |
The centerpiece of this dance headdress is the carved frontlet known as an "amhalaayt." Here, the frontlet appears with the rest of the headdress, which consists of "a long train of white ermine skins and a crown or circlet of upright sea-lion whiskers." "The crown [was] filled with eagle down that [was] shaken out during the dance as a sign of welcome to potlatch guests." "A rich symbol of high social rank, the main figure carved on many frontlets features a long, recurved beak and is enclosed by a carved or inlaid border." From "The Transforming Image: Painted Arts of Northwest Coast First Nations," by Bill McLennan and Karen Duffek, Douglas & McIntyre, UBC Press, 2000. Museum of British Columbia, Prince Rupert, BC. |
