It is well known that he was exceedingly anxious to serveon the Labour Commission, but Her Majestys Ministers have alwaysbeen unwilling that the Heir-Apparent should take an active part inmatters connected, even indirectly, with politics, and he has had there-fore constantly to play the part of the Queens deputy without theresponsibilities and interests naturally attaching to the position. It is no exaggeration to say that there are few men now living whopossess better general qualifications for the difficult work of servingon Royal Commissions than the Prince of Wales. He is familiarwith an almost bewildering variety of subjects, and possesses awonderful faculty for almost instinctively grasping the importantfeatures and the really essential points of any matter under discussion.
