Summary[edit]

Description
English: The former H.M. Kinne House, now the Tillou Manor apartments, 417 Franklin Street (corner Virginia Street), Buffalo, New York, December 2019. Erected in 1870, the house is a three-story brick structure in the Second Empire style interestingly modified in 1916 with a Neoclassical portico that features Tuscan columns around the front entrance as well as a frieze adorned with triglyphs and topped in turn by a cornice and a handsome balustrade. Otherwise the house is a classic example of the former style, with the requisite wood-shingled, flat-topped mansard roof and pedimented dormer windows. A direct descendant of Governor William Bradford of the Plymouth Colony, Henry Mortimer Kinne (1815-1888) was born in Mansfield, Connecticut and came to Buffalo as a young man some time before 1841. Employed as a commission merchant with local firms such as Brundage, Bruce & Co. and later as partner in the firm of Lockwood & Kinne, Kinne had moved into the manufacturing business by 1871. Later owners of the building included otolaryngologist Dr. Edward Mehl, whose offices were located in the house in the early 20th century, and Dana Tillou, who ran his combination art gallery and antique furniture shop here from the 1960s until 2016. It's now luxury apartments.
