Summary[edit]

Description

Gymnosporangium effusum F. Kern

Image location: East Lakeshore Trails, Greenback, Loudon Co., Tennessee, USA

Covering the lower portion of the trunks of living Juniperus virginiana (Eastern Red Cedar). These were thick on the bases up to the midportions of the trunk, found on 3 trees with maybe a quart on each tree, in colums growing vertically up the trunk. This would be very different from the gall formed by G. juniperus-virginianae: https://mushroomobserver.org/91474?q=1B7ku Fruitbodies were very delicate, falling off/disintigrating when touched (maybe this was due to age/weather).

Recognized by sight: Telia caulicolous, in long series on trunk of Juniperus virginiana, range: New York to South Carolina

Used references: Handbook of North American Uredinales

Based on microscopic features: teliospores oblong-ellipsoid 16-22 × 45-55 microns, wall brown, 1-2 microns thick
