Gymnopilus luteocarneus Hesler Image location: Kent Lake, Marin Co., California, USA Growing on the ground in fairly deep humus. Habitat mixed woods of Doug fir, Live oak and others, Caps up to 7.2 cm across. Stipes up to 5 cm long and hollow, some pinched and with white tomentum at base. Taste slightly bitter. Spore print orange-rusty and ~ 6.9-8.5 X 5.2-6.0 microns, ellipsoid and slightly rough. Cheilocystidia was sparse, capitate, ~ 40-48 X 4-6 microns. Haven’t found a good match as yet. Don’t have the Hesler monograph. Recognized by sight: near type location (Alpine Lake, Marin County) Used references Based on microscopic features
