Description The U.S. Navy Grumman A-6C Intruder prototype (BuNo 151568) in flight. The A-6C was fitted with a forward-looking infra-red and a low-light level television system a ventral TRIM (Trails-Roads Interdiction Multisensors) pod faired into the lower fuselage. Smaller sensors were installed in other locations, notably in a teardrop-fairing underneath the windshield on the port side of the forward fuselage. The A-6C flew for the first time in December 1968. 151568 was not used operationally and is listed as a KA-6D tanker. The U.S. Navy converted 12 A-6As to A-6Cs which were used by Attack Squadron VA-165 in the Vietnam War. The 11 surviving aircraft were modified to the A-6E standard between 1975 and 1980.
