Rand: STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS Kommentar: Geschenk der Royal Mint (www.royalmint.com). - Äußerer Ring aus Nickel-Messing, innerer Teil aus Kupfer-Nickel. - Die Randaufschrift (Wir stehen auf den Schultern von Giganten) ist ein Zitat aus einem Brief von Sir Isaac Newton aus dem Jahre 1676, mit welchem er die Verdienste früherer Wissenschaftlergenerationen für die Erkenntnisse der Gegenwart sinnfällig und mit Demut beschreibt. Newton war von 1699 bis 1727 selbst als 'Master' der Royal Mint tätig. Newton ist allerdings keinesfalls der Erfinder dieses Bildes, welches bereits erstmals bei Bernhard von Chartres im 12. Jh. belegt ist (Zwerge auf den Schultern von Giganten). - Das Rückseitenmotiv erschien erstmals 1997 auf der Rs. einer Münze zu 2 Pfund.
