Description in Dutch on the history of Grimbergen Castle (Belgium)

Summary[edit]

Description
English: Description in Dutch on the history of Grimbergen Castle (Belgium). The restored Donjon tower is visible at the background. Summary: Descendants of Wouter Berthout (1095) extended their territory, which was not acceptable to the lords of Leuven. At the end of the Grimbergen wars (1159), the Berthout wooden Castle was burnt. Since the 16th century, their descendants -the Bergen family- erected and enlarged a novel "Prince" Castle which flourished for a number of centuries. During World War II (1944), this Castle was burnt by the retreating German army. The Donjon tower has been restored by the Community of Grimbergen in 1992. Further restorations are in progress (see metal fence)
