Bei einer Zurücksetzung im Dienste

Weihnachten 1844

Am heil'gen Christtagabend
Den Kindern man beschert,
Da ist denn eitel Freude
An Wägelchen und Pferd.

Am heil'gen Christtagabend,
Obgleich ich längst kein Kind,
Hat man mir auch bescheret,
Gut wie die Menschen sind.

Man gab mir einen Kummer,
Man gab mir eine Qual,
Die tief am Leben naget,
Das längst schon geht zu Tal.

Man gab' mir die Gewißheit,
Mein Streben sei verkannt,
Und ich ein armer Fremdling
In meinem Vaterland.

Man hat beim nah'nden Winter
Genommen mir das Nest,
Und hieß mich weiter wandern
Für meines Lebens Rest.

Doch ist's der Lauf der Zeiten;
Ein Trost nur stellt sich dar:
Bin ich auch nichts geworden,
Ich blieb doch, der ich war.
