A largebusiness is done here in locomotives for colliery pur-poses, and for this class of engine the Phoenix Foundryhas for a long time rivalled the engine shops of Man-chester and the Tyne. Here the well-known patentDawes steam compound engines, fitted with Holts ex-pansion gear, are made, and the Phoenix steam hammer, designed and erected by the company, appears tohave been extensively adopted at various Iron-makingcentres. The success of this great factory, and thegeneral approbation accorded to its productions, may,no doubt, be attributed in some degree to the qualityof the Iron, none but Lilleshall pig Iron being usedat these foundries, the comparative superiority in thestrength of which is admitted on all hands.
