Object history
Deutsch: Die Stadtvertretung Greven hat das Wappen nach Beratungen mit dem damaligen Archivrat Dr. Joseph Prinz am 15. Dezember 1949 angenommen, das der Innenminister des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen gemeinsam mit der Stadtflagge am 6. März 1950 genehmigte. Es dürfte sich dabei um einen Entwurf des Graphikers Mallek handeln, der alle Grevener Wappen gestaltet hat.
Schon Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts hatte es Versuche gegeben, ein Grevener Wappen ohne Erlaubnis des Münsterschen Domkapitels einzuführen. Damals hatte man sich als Wahrzeichen Grevens ein Schiff ausgesucht, das - wie 1801 begründet wurde - sehr passend war, weil der Ort damals eine besondere Vorliebe für die Schifffahrt auf der Ems hatte. In der Tat war Greven lange Zeit der Endpunkt der Schifffahrt auf der Ems.

„Blau-Weiß-Blau im Verhältnis 1:5:1 längsgestreift, im oberen Drittel mit dem Wappen belegt“[1]
English: Adopted by the city council 15 December 1949, granted by the Minister of the Interior of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia 6 March 1950.
The arms show a cargo vessel, or Pünte, and was chosen as a symbol for the historical sailing and shipping on the Ems river. Greven was the southern endpoint and a center of these activities, and also dependent on it, until the middle of the 19th century.
