Summary
[edit]DescriptionGreta bridges - A66 Greta Bridge - geograph.org.uk - 771929.jpg |
English: Greta bridges - A66 Greta Bridge. Between the former Keswick and Threlkeld stations, the disused Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway crossed the River Greta no fewer than 8 times in a distance of only 4 miles. All these bridges are of the bow-string girder construction, of various sizes and alignments. In addition, the same stretch saw it crossing the Greta's main feeder, the River Glenderamackin, although the bridge here is of a simpler design. This stretch of railway, which opened in 1865 and closed in 1972, has now been converted into a footpath/cycleway, so all the bridges are easily accessible. To view all the bridges, which for identification purposes I have numbered 1 to 9 in an upstream direction, see https://www.geograph.org.uk/search.php?i=2583546. Also included in the series are the two viaducts by which the A66 crosses the Greta, and the interesting Threlkeld Bridge on the old A594.
This impressive road viaduct was built in the 1970s and carries the A66 Keswick bypass over the Greta. It was voted "Best concrete engineering structure of the century" by the Concrete Society in September 1999 (picture of plaque in next photo in the series, or 771932 if this is being viewed on a standalone basis). |
