Summary

[edit]
Author
Henry Tombleson; James Carter; Tombleson and Co
Description
English: Greenwich Hospital

A view from the north-east for Tombleson's 'Thames' series, first published in 1834. Compared to the view from Greenwich Hill in the same series (PAD2247), this is notably accurate and of particular interest in showing the old George Tavern to the left of the Hospital crane and its river stairs, at the end of the Five-Foot Walk. The George was replaced by Joseph Kay's Trafalgar Tavern in 1837. The river craft are also well-observed and the decorative border hints at the Hospital's role, with (old?) sleeping lions and figures and emblems symbolic of sea-power.
