Summary[edit]

Author
Carpenter and Son; Clarkson Stanfield; George Cooke; J. and A. Arch; Longman and Co; S. H. Hawkins
Description
English: Greenwich Hospital, 1828, for George Cooke's 'Views in London and its Vicinity'

One of ten views done by Stanfield from 1827 for Cooke's 'Views in London and its Vicinity', which was issued serially in twelve parts of four copper-engraved plates and published as a volume in 1834. This was engraved as plate 48, the last in the series. Much of the basic sketching was done by Cooke's son, Edward William, later Stanfield's principal follower as a marine artist, from which he and other contributing artists worked up scenes like this atmospheric view of Greenwich Hospital from the Isle of Dogs, with Dutch boats on the left and a rainbow.

The original watercolour was bequeathed to the City of Manchester Art Gallery in 1917. In both images Stanfield's signature is on the mooring buoy, onshore by the boat in the right foreground.
