Description
English: On June 14, 2018, NASA’s Terra satellite flew over the Aegean Sea, allowing the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board to acquire a beautiful true-color image of several of the many Greek Islands.

Uniquely situated at the intersection of Europe, Asia, and Africa, the Greek Islands are rich in history, rich in biodiversity, geographically fascinating, and a popular tourist destination. About 6,000 islands and islets are scattered in the seas between Greece and western Turkey, each slightly different than the next. Taken together, these islands own about 4,660 miles (7,500 km) of the country’s 9,942 miles (16,000 km) of coastline.

The waters in this image appear a mirror-like silvery color with smudges and ripples of blue. This is an area of “sunglint” which occurs when the satellite is directly in line with sunlight being reflected back from the water. When waters in sunglint are perfectly smooth, the waters appear silvery from the light of the sun being reflected off the water. In contrast, light does reflect directly back to the instrument where waters are rough, so waves in the water are highlighted in blue.
