Description
English: Sketch map showing the inferred location of the “Graupensandrinne”, an incised valley (10 to 25 km wide) at the northern margin of the Northern Alpine Foreland Basin (“Molassebecken”), which formed and was filled during late Early or Middle Miocene times.
The Graupensand River Valley System drained the area north of the Alps from NE to SW towards what is now northern Switzerland (then covered by sea). Continued tectonic uplift of the Alpine Foreland and the Black Forest in the Late Miocene and Pliocene led to the development of the ancient Upper Danube river system (“Ur-Donau”), draining most of the German part of the Alpine Foreland from SW to NE. Drawn according to data given in Buchner et al. (1998),[1] current geography is based on GoogleMaps.
Deutsch: Kartenskizze mit Position und Verlauf der Graupensandrinne, eines spätunter- oder mittelmiozänen, ca. 10 bis 25 km breiten Flusstals am nördlichen Rand des Molassebeckens, über das die Region nördlich der Alpen von Nordst nach Südwest in die heutige nördliche Schweiz (damals vom Meer bedeckt) entwässerte. Fortgesetzte tektonische Hebung des Alpenvorlandes und des Schwarzwaldes im späten Miozän und Pliozän führte zur Entstehung des Flusssystem der Urdonau, welches den überwiegenden Teil des deutschen Alpenvorlandes nunmehr nach Nordosten entwässerte. Gezeichnet nach Daten von Buchner et al. (1998),[1] die aktuelle Geographie basiert auf GoogleMaps.
