They were starving or theirchildren were starving, and lest we might not understandtheir tongue, they would pat their mouths or their breaststo show how empty they were. The General had an assortment of coins,and, although warned in the most judicious manneragainst encouraging pauj)erism, he did encourage it, andwith so much success that before he was half way up themountain he was a pauper himself to the extent of bor-rowing pennies from, some of his companions to keep upthe demands upon his generosity.
