View of the large arm of the Senegal river from Sor during the rainy season

Summary[edit]

Description
English: The Langue de Barbarie is a thin sand spit a few hundred meters wide which is designed to protect the city from the onslaught of wave. Unfortunately it prevents a rapid evacuation of water from the river during floods. As a result, the city was subject to recurrent river flooding at the end of the rainy season. The artificial opening of a breach, 7 kilometers south of the city, following the October 2003 flood, radically changed the city’s flooding.
