Summary[edit]

Description
English: Grace House, 2025 Bailey Avenue at Doat Street, Buffalo, New York, November 2020. The building was first used as a fire station, namely the former Engine No. 31 and Hook & Ladder No. 14; the identity of its designer is not known with complete certainty, but is likely city-employed architect Howard Beck, given the very similar design of the incontrovertibly Beck-designed former Engine No. 33 station house. The two buildings share the motifs of rough-textured stone lintels and windowsills as well as a dormer on the façade whose gable returns are suggestive of a broken pediment; however, the robust round arches and heavier massing place Engine 31/Ladder 14's architecture squarely in the Romanesque Revival tradition. Perhaps the most interesting architectural element, however, is the former hose tower, with a skylight roof, louvered windows, and cornice. The firehouse was built in 1896 and served the city for over a century, being decommissioned in 2009 in favor of a new home just a block north along Bailey Avenue. Since then it has been owned by Saving Grace Ministries, who have converted it into one of several Buffalo-area locations of Grace House, a halfway house for formerly incarcerated individuals working their way back into the community.
