Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Gossan is a porous, iron hydroxy-oxide rock formed by oxidative weathering of sulfide-rich rocks. This gossan occurred as surface float on a late Precambrian dolostone outcrop near Lone Mountain, Alaska. The dolostone rocks lacked obvious sulfide mineralization, however.

Host unit: Khuchaynik Dolostone, Neoproterozoic

Locality: crest of first major north-south trending ridge west of Lone Mountain [the true Lone Mountain, which caps out at 2646' elevation - the USGS topo. map & Google Earth have incorrectly labeled Lone Mountain] (SE 1/4 of section 14, T28N, R30W, McGrath C-4 1:63,360 United States Geological Survey topographic map), east of Big River, Yukon-Koyukuk County, southwest-central Alaska (= locality of Babcock et al., 1994, United States Geological Survey Bulletin 2107, p. 146) (vicinity of 62° 30’ 49.87" North latitude, 154° 46' 41.05" West longitude)
