Title |
Gold finger ring engraved "WW". |
||
Description |
English: Gold signet ring with oval bezel engraved with the initials W and W flanking an openwork knot, all within a beaded border. Plain hoop. No hallmark. Late 16th-17th century. External diameter of hoop is 20.54mm, internal diameter is 18.1mm, bezel height is 16.81mm, bezel width is 14.01mm. Weight 7.75g. British Museum report (Judy Rudoe): "Date: Late 16th or 17th century. Gold ring, the hoop expanding at shoulders with oval bezel set vertically. The bezel engraved with the initials WW, an interlaced knot above and below and beaded border. Note: This is a characteristic type of the period. The use of the interlaced double knot suggests that the initials are those of a married couple. Several similar examples are held by the BM. The precious metal content of the ring fulfils the requirements of the Treasure Act in that it is greater than 10%." |
