Description
English: On 20 September 1944 Allied forces op the US 504 Parachute Infantry regiment (Part of the 82nd US Airborne Division) crossed the Waal with the goal of capturing the bridges over the river. The boats used in the crossing were collapsible British Goatley boats. The only known remaining boat used during the actual Waal crossing can be found in the National Liberation Museum 1944-1945 in Groesbeek, the Netherlands. The boat is made out of wood and canvas and only weighs 330 pounds. This means the boat could be easily lifted and maneuvered. The main disadvantage was that the boats were very fragile. Photographed in the collection of the National Liberation Museum 1944-1945.
Nederlands: Op 20 september 1944 staken geallieerde troepen van de US 504 Parachute Infantry Regiment (deel van de 82ste Airborne Divisie) de Waal over met als doel de bruggen over de rivier in te nemen. De boten die ze voor deze oversteek gebruikten waren inklapbare Britse Goatley boten. Het enige overgebleven exemplaar dat tijdens de Waaloversteek gebruikt is, is te zien in het Nationaal Bevrijdingsmuseum 1944-1945 in Groesbeek. De boot is gemaakt van hout en canvas en weegt daardoor slechts 150 kilo. Hierdoor is de boot makkelijk op te tillen en te verplaatsen. Het grote nadeel is echter dat deze boten zeer kwetsbaar zijn. Gefotografeerd in de collectie van het Nationaal Bevrijdingsmuseum 1944-1945.
