Summary[edit]

Description
English: Gjógvarábáturin is the oldest of the Faroe Boats in the village Vágur in Suðuroy, Faroe Islands. It is one of 10 so-called Grindabátur. It was built in 1873 by boat builder Jóhan í Garði from the island Nólsoy, it was ordered by a man from Klaksvík in the Northern Islands, who was called Jóan Petur á Stongunum. The boat was then called Stangabáturin. At that time the boat was used to transportation of merchandise between Klaksvík and Tórshavn. In 1883 the boat went shipwreck and 6 of 7 men died. The boat was found in Nólsoy and in 1885 it was sold to Hans Jacob á Løðhamri from Vágur. The boat got a new name, first it was called Nordstjernen (the Danish name for the North Star), but later it changed its name to Gjógvarábátur. The boat has a nickname, most people call it Vatnkíkur. The boat has belonged to Vágur since 1885 and it is still in use.
