Meanwhile at a meeting of the Boardof Directors of the Metropolitan Opera and Real EstateCompany on February 7 Otto H. Kahn and Edmund L.Baylies, directors of the Conried Company, made a requestthat the period of the lease, which still had three years torun, be extended. The lease had been framed to be opera-tive only during the administration of Mr. Conried; thedirectors of the Conried Company asked that this restrictionbe withdrawn. The obvious conclusion from the fact thatthe matter was discussed for two hours and then laid overwas that there was a division in the Conried Company onthe question of the retention of the president and managingdirector. On February 10 it was reported that Conriedwould resign on the following day, that the resignationwould be accepted, and that he would be succeeded byGiulio Gatti-Casazza and Andreas Dippel as joint manag-

The statement was in accord with the facts.On February 12 the directors of the Conried Company madeofficial announcement that Mr. Conried, on account of thecondition of his health and consequent inability to continuein charge of the affairs of the company, would retire aspresident and director not later than May 1, 1908; thatthe company, while retaining its corporate entity, wouldchange its title and be known thereafter as the MetropolitanOpera Company; that as such it had leased the house forfive years beginning June 1, 1908, and with the approval ofthe Metropolitan Opera and Real Estate Company hadengaged Giulio Gatti-Casazza as general manager andAndreas Dippel as administrative manager.
