Meanwhile at a meeting of the Boardof Directors of the Metropolitan Opera and Real EstateCompany on February 7 Otto H. Kahn and Edmund L.Baylies, directors of the Conried Company, made a requestthat the period of the lease, which still had three years torun, be extended. The lease had been framed to be opera-tive only during the administration of Mr. Conried; thedirectors of the Conried Company asked that this restrictionbe withdrawn. The obvious conclusion from the fact thatthe matter was discussed for two hours and then laid overwas that there was a division in the Conried Company onthe question of the retention of the president and managingdirector. On February 10 it was reported that Conriedwould resign on the following day, that the resignationwould be accepted, and that he would be succeeded byGiulio Gatti-Casazza and Andreas Dippel as joint manag-
