Summary[edit]

Description
English: Mural monument to Gilbert II Paige (d.1669) of Barnstaple, Devon, in St Peter's Church, Barnstaple, south wall of chancel. Obscured by a display case containing a clerical vestment, left. Inscribed in Latin as follows:
(Translated as: "Sacred to the memory of Gilbert Paige, merchant, by birth and indeed by demeanour truly honourable, a man of outstanding piety towards God, of outstanding fidelity to his Prince, of outstanding probity towards all, who died the 28 day of March 1669, to whom were born by Mary his dearest wife (the daughter of Walter Tucker, merchant, and Sara his wife) William and Sara still surviving. Walter, Gilbert, John, Walter, John, Richard, Mary, buried in this mound adjoining, all at peace together in hope of a joyful Resurrection by the merits of Our Saviour Jesus Christ".)

On top are shown the arms of Paige (Argent, on a bend sable three eaglets displayed or) impaling Tucker (Barry wavy of twelve argent and azure, a chevron embattled counter-embattled or charged with five gouttes de poix between three sea-horses passant sable maned and finned of the third), apparently a reference to the arms of the Spanish Company of which many leading Barnstaple merchants were members, with crest of Paige above: A demi-phoenix displayed

These arms of Tucker and crest of Tucker (A dexter cubit arm grasping a battle axe) are also shown on the ledger stone of Captain Andrew Tucker (d.1686) in St Mildred's Church, Tenterden, Kent, inscribed as follows: Here lyeth ye body of Capt. Andrew Tucker of Tenderden in Kent, son of Richard Tucker of Brixham in Devon, Gent, who departed this life ye 3rd day of April, Anno Dom. 1680, in the 54th year of his age. Leaving issue two sons and two daughters, viz., Elhanan and Kemuell, Ann and Judeth. (See image[1])

In 1538 Robert Tucker of Exeter received a grant of arms: Barry wavy of 10 argent and azure, on a chevron embattled or between 3 sea-horses naiant passant, 5 gouttes de poix. He was supposedly a brother of William Tucker of Throwleigh, Devon. Circa 1616 the Tucker family became established on the island of Bermuda, from where several lines emigrated to Virginia in the mid 1600s. A Tucker family using similar arms was established in Gravesend, Kent. (See heraldic ledger stone in Tenterden Church, Kent, of Capt. Andrew Tucker (d.1680) of Tenterden, son of Richard Tucker of Brixham, Devon, Gent.). Burke’s Landed Gentry, 1900, lists Marwood Tucker of Coryton Park, Devon (a descendant of William Tucker (1618-1691), of Westwater, Devon) who used similar arms.
