h New York, plantedon a prominent hill on the north side of the Wheat-field Road about three hundred yards east of itsjuncture with the Emmetsburg Road. Back of thePeach Orchard, which is situated on a plateau form-ing the top of the ridge, the country slopes rapidlybut not precipitately to the eastward, forming awide grassy valley that extends far away to thesouth. This valley divided Birneys line, his firstbrigade, commanded by Graham, being stationedwest of it, in the Peach Orchard at the apex of theSahent, and a part of it facing to the westward inHumphreys wing. This contour of the groundoccasioned a wide gap in Birneys line, which beyondthe valley was continued to the south and east at thebeginning of the Loop, where De Trobriands andWards brigades took it up and by devious ways,continued it in the direction of Devils Den.
